A Thousand Words

Is a picture worth 1000 words? When it is a new cover for CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY, apparently the answer is a resounding YES. If you have not seen the cover, here it is:

charlie cover

I think it is rather creepy, but I winder if that is not the intended effect? After all, the story itself is more than a little disturbing.

When it comes to covers, there are always hits and misses at least as far as readers go. I have some covers that are favorites of mine. Who could ever improve on WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE or LEGEND OF THE BLUEBONNET or MISS RUMPHIUS? But then there are the covers that continue to change and evolve as readers change and evolve. Take a look at the various incarnations of THE OUTSIDERS, for instance:

outsiders
outsiders 2
outsiders3
outsiders4

And there are many ore from which to select. What do the various covers say about the time in which this edition of the book was published? Do the covers affect how you think about the book?

Interesting questions to consider as we head into the weekend.
