A few short items for comment today:

A middle school student reported she was suspended for refusing to take the CCSS test. I am not even sure how to respond to this. Surely there are more serious matters that need addressing than whether a student has opted herself out of the test (and possibly had her parent opt her out as well). Would it have been better to have her take the test and bubble in randomly as some of our kids do?

Paul Thomas writes about "bad" teachers and the hyperbole surrounding them. This hyperbole is mostly created by, you guessed it, the media.

Kylene Beers hilt upon a blog post of mine and provides us with more research about reading enjoyment and reading achievement.

Kate Messner wrote this most excellent blog post about gender issues in children's literature.
