ending with a bang not a whimper

My final duty as outgoing chair of the 2013 Odyssey Committee was to host the awards ceremony yesterday. Before the ceremony, the audio publishers (Books on Tape/Listening Library, Macmillan Audio, and Brilliance Audio) held a brunch for the committee and the narrators. I absolutely cannot describe how inspiring it was to sit next to and talk with these distinguished voices who bring books to life on audio. Elliott Hill talked about consulting with Cornelia Funke about characters; Nat Parker kept us all laughing with his stories about doing the recording sessions. Kate Rudd spoke quietly but passionately about narrating THE FAULT IN OUR STARS, and Katy Kellgren spoke of the challenges of bringing all of the elements of Monstrous Beauty to life.

The presentation of the awards gave each narrator the opportunity to speak to the audience of about 200 present for the ceremony. Elizabeth Fama, the author of Monstrous Beauty, was also present and told us that she is an audiobook addict thanks to Katy Kellgren. The event concluded with Kate Rudd reading the opening scene of FIOS, I sat there mesmerized once again as I listened to those narrators, the folks who brought to life our award winners. Everyone in attendance left with a CD sampler of our four winning titles plus one free audiobook provided by the publishers of the winning titles,. Make plans now to attend this event in Vegas in 2014 at annual.

One final note, two of my doctoral students were present for the award ceremony and were so helpful as we were setting up. They also guarded thhe giveaway table and stayed afterward to talk. I am eternally grateful to you guys. Thanks, Rebecca and Melanie, for being there and helping out..

Now, we are packed and heading to the airport shortly. I will miss seeing my ALA friends, bu I know Scout is sitting waiting for his humans to come home.
