BAILEY by Harry Bliss (Scholastic 2011) is the tale of a dog who is always running late for school. Each day, he accompanies the kids to school and participates in all of the activities, lunch most enthusiastically. Bliss uses perspective to permit readers to see in close up and then in panoramic vision to emphasize the action and the humor. <270>

THE KISS BOX by Bonnie Verburg with illustrations by Henry Cole (Scholastic, September 2011) is perfect for those kids who have separation anxiety. As a mother bear prepares to leave, she assures her cub again and again that her love remains behind. Finally, the two each make a kiss box so that they can send kisses back and forth to one another even when they are apart. Tie this one to THE MOON WAS THE BEST by Anita Lobel. <271>

Rand Burkert's retelling of Aesop's MOUSE AND LION with illustrations by Nancy Ekholm Burkert (Michael Di Capua Books, September 2011) is quiet. The illustrations, done is soft pastels, reinforce the meek and quiet nature of the mouse who stumbles over a lion one day. The detailed illustrations are ones that all readers will spend some time examining. Burkert has composed songs to accompany the text. These can be found at www.booksoncape.com.
