BIRDS OF A FEATHER by Jane Yolen with photographs by Jason Stemple (Wordsong 2011) is visually stunning. The photographs by Stemple are sharp, close-up, and detailed. Add in the poetry of Jane Yolen, and this is a feast of a book. From haiku to free verse, the forms seems somehow to match the bird being described/ Tie this one to Gary Schmidt's OKAY FOR NOW and to A NEST FOR CELESTE so that student might learn of the work of Audubon. <205>
Anna Grossnickle Hines gives readers PEACEFUL PIECES: POEMS AND QUILTS ABOUT PEACE (Holt 2011). Quilts are used as the background illustrations for a variety of poetic forms including acrostic, haiku, blank verse, and more. Here are poems to share aloud with students even now that poetry month has ended. <206>
