JANIE JONES: WORST.VAMPIRE.EVER by Caissie St. Onge (Ember, May 2011) is an interesting take on the teen vampire novel. Jane (Josephine) and her family were turned into vampires during the Dust Bowl days. Unfortunately for Janie, she turned out to be blood-intolerant. She experiences anaphalactic shock if she comes into contact with all but a rare blood type. This, of courser, makes being a vampire and a healthy vampire a bit more of a tricky situation. Janie is beginning a new school (the family moves every 4 years to avoid suspicion from the non-vamps in the community) and it is not off to an auspicious start. Astrid, a fellow student and vampire kidnaps a drunken mortal so she and her friends can get tipsy from his blood. Janie accidentally comes into contact with the blood andis rescued by her mother. It is an embarrassing way to begin a new chapter in her life. There is much more in terms of complications coming her way, though, including a mortal potential boyfriend, the aforementioned mean vamp Astrid, and some other surprises. Eminently readable, this novel is sure to be a hit with the paranormal fans. <134>
