Drawing a blank

Shayne Blank comes riding into Mikey Martin's miserable high school existence at just teh right time. Mikey, who is decidedly and purposefully different from his classmates (he wears suits he purchases at a thrift shop from bar mitzvah kids who have outgrown them), is beset upon by Jon, the resident bully and also his sister's boyfriend. Jon forces Mikey to hide a paper bag with, Mikey is certain, drugs in it. When drug sniffing dogs hit the school campus, Mikey throws the bag into the trash. Now, Jon is demanding that Mikey pay him the $500 the drugs would have netted him. This is the back story readers will get from Shane who ambles (or limps) into the police station late one afternoon to confess that he has murdered someone. Detective Rawls is patient and permits Shane to tell the story his own way. It is a tale of bullies, drugs, confrontation, and perhaps a murder. All of it unfolds as the narration shifts from SHane to Mikey to Detective Rawls in this slim novel that is not short on thrills and suspense. Hautman knows how to craft a story and keep readers engaged from start to finish. He proves it again in BLANK CONFESSION. <113>
