Exposed



EXPOSED by Kimberly Marcus (Random House 2011) is a novel in verse that centers on the life of Liz, a high school student whose photography will be, she hopes, her ticket to college. Liz and Kate have been best friends since elementary school; the two could not be closer. However, Liz and Kate argue one evening about Liz's boyfriend. Liz storms off to sleep on the sofa leaving Kate to sleep in the bed. The next day Kate is gone before Liz awakens. Despite Liz's proffered apologies, Kate remains cool and unapproachable. What has caused this rift? It has to be more than the argument over boyfriends, right? <93>

In her debut novel, Marcus uses the blank verse to tell the story of two teens whose friendship is shattered by the events of one evening. The language is, of course, spare, leaving readers to wonder and speculate and debate. Here are some possible reading ladder rungs:
