UNSINKABLE by Gordon Korman (Scholastic, May 2011) is the first in a trilogy of books set aboard the ill-fated Titanic. Readers will meet 4 characters whose fates are now in the hands of that unsinkable ship bound across the sea. Paddy is a stowaway disguising himself as a steward. Alfie has lied about his age to get a job on the ship to be near his father. Sophie's mother is a suffragette. Both of them are aboard the ship headed back to America. And then there is Julianna who has enjoyed a life of privilege that the others have never known. How the lives of the four intersect is the foundation of this first book. Short chapters, lots of action, and the threat of exposure to the authorities make this a quick read. Of course, knowing the ultimate fate of so many of the passengers, readers will wonder if any of the four will survive the sinking of the great boat. <554>
Thanks, Gordon, for sending me the ARC. I have been fortunate enough to know Gordon for many years., When I was a middle school teacher, he was one of the authors who came to visit the students. I have been on panels with him and have the chance to see him now and then at conferences. He has even been on the back of my better half's motorcycle during one of his trips here to Texas.
Finally, Merry Christmas to all of you. I am not sure that I will get to my book for the day. We are heading over to see the newlyweds for lunch/dinner. I suspect a couple of mimosas will take the place of the book for today. I hope all of you have a lovely day with family and friends. I know this has been a season of loss for many of my friends. I hope that you will hold on to the memories of those you have lost. It is always a little tougher this time of year, I know from experience. We try to celebrate those who will not be with us by telling stories. After all, without stories, we have no history of family and friends. So, share stories with one another this day. And take refuge in them as well.
