biographies reach down

ME...JANE by Patrick McDonnell (Little Brown 2011) is the childhood slice of life bio of Jane Goodall. It seems to me that I have seen a few biographies of late that are reaching to the younger crowd by some new authors. I do not want to forget the pioneering work of David Adler and Diane Stanley and Jean Fritz and others, but these new ones are a grand addition to the ladders, too. The quiet text is almost lyrical in its simple words and rhythms. The illustrations mirror this quiet with gentle shades of yellow and brown and green as Jane goes about her daily routines, with her stuffed chimp, Jubilee. She is observant, of course. She loves reading, of course. And, at the end, her dreams come true. <520>

WHEN BOB MET WOODY
THE WATCHER: JABE GOODALL WITH THE CHIMPS
