Books #499 and 500!

I began this year as a member of Paul Hankins New Centurions, a group dedicated to read 100 books in 2010. Since I am a reviewer, a booktalker, and a member of some selection committees, this was a good challenge for me to keep up. And I did. Once I passed the first goal, I set a second one: to read an average of a book a day (thanks to Donalyn Miller this summer I did read at least a book a day). I met that goal and am now reaching book #500. Yes, some of them are picture books. Some are adult. A few are professional. Most books, though, are for tweens and teens. I have kept a month by month list to remind myself of the treasure trove of books I have read this year. So, here are the two that place me at 500. I will have a few more to post about tomorrow.

Leonid Gore gives readers a die cut book in WORMS FOR LUNCH (Scholastic 2011). Who eats worms for lunch? Not the chick who prefers seeds or the mouse who prefers cheese or the cow who would rather eat grass. This book might serve as a prelude to THE VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR. <499>

WHERE'S WALRUS by Stephen Savage (Scholastic 2011) has an escaped walrus hiding in plain sight. He is a mannequin in a department store window, just another diner, a bricklayer, a firefighter, and much more much to the consternation of the zookeeper seeking to capture him. <500>
