closing in on 400

Because of my commitment to read 100 books this year and joining the #bookaday challenge this summer (thanks Paul and Donalyn), I am approaching 400 books for the year. Some are picture books as you know. Some are tween books and some are YA. A handful are adult. It has been a great ride so far. I plan to keep pushing myself to read even when I am tired. It has become a good habit. Now if I can just avoid eating.... Here are the picture books I am squeezing in before I leave for the day.

Newbie has passed all of her preliminary tests to become a rescue bunny in Doreen Cronin's RESCUE BUNNIES illustrated by Scott Menchin (Balzer and Bray 2010). She is called to help rescue a giraffe stuck in the mud and to be on the alert for a pack of hyenas in the area. Plucky Newbie aids in the rescue mostly by ignoring some of the rules and standing her ground beside (actually roped on to) the threatened giraffe. Courage in the face of adversity is always difficult. Newbie shows how to do just that. <390>

Kate and Jim McMullan give us I'M BIG! (Balzer and Bray 2010). A sauropod is separated from the rest of his pack because he arose late. As he searches for this group, he encounters lots of adventures and even faces some dangers. Good thing he's BIG! <391>

BETSY RED HOODIE by Gail Carson Levine with illustrations by Scott Nash (Harper 2010) is a clever variation of Little Red Riding Hood in which one of the shepherds who helps Betsy keep her sheep in place is a wolf. Others are appalled that Betsy would trust her flock to a wolf let along allow the wolf to accompany her on a visit to Grandmas's House. However, all turns out well. The end papers and cover are all part of the story, too. Great design and storytelling. <392>

I head home now to a porchless house (we are replacing our deck and adding a screened in room) and two rooms with painters sanding and painting and another room having texture applied to the walls. Hmmm, maybe I should just stay here and read????
