settle down, there

Two of the picture books from yesterday's stack had to do with sleep and quiet.

ONE DROWSY DRAGON by Ethan Long (Orchard 2010) features a hapless dragon trying to get to sleep only to be kept awake by noisy little dragons. First, there is only one noisy dragon. Soon, however, there are 2 then 3 then 4 in this book that can also underscore counting concepts. A neat little surprise at the end awaits patient readers. <338>

Sylvie is instructed by her frustrated mother to count some sheep to get to sleep in THE SLEEP SHEEP by Anna McQuinn and Hannah Shaw (Chicken House 2010). The trouble is that the sheep just will not keep still long enough for Sylvie to count them all. When finally the sheep settle down, and Sylvie begins to count, it is not long before she does drift off into sleep. A nice bit of surprise at the end adds to the hilarity of the story. <339>
