almost alert

I am almost accustomed to the time change. We left early this morning and drove to Seal Beach and then up the Pacific Coast Highway to Newport before coming back to the hotel. On the way back, a warning light appeared on the instrument panel. It said we had low tire pressure. When we got off the freeway, we discovered it was actually a bit more and that the tire was hissing from a leak, cut, or something. So back to the rental car agency for a replacement vehicle. Ah, life.

Here is one of the books I read on the plane yesterday.

BRAIN CAMP, a graphic novel by Susan Kim and Laurence Klavan and Faith Erin Hicks (First Second 2010) is the story of two losers who are sent away to a camp guaranteed to make them smarter and more motivated over the summer. Once they arrive, Jenna and Lucas quickly surmise that something is amiss. Think Stepford Children meet Alien and you have the gist of the threat. All of it is being done in the name of science and better test scores, though (and I think that is one of the funniest moments in this very dark mystery). Colors are subdued and dark, heightening the mystery that is afoot. Jenna and Lucas are, of course, not losers. They are victims of circumstances beyond their control and, in actuality, bright kids who manage to save the day (or do they?).
