on the road again, just can't wait

As soon as we grab our traditional Friday morning breakfast at the local cafe, I head 400 miles south to the Rio Grande Valley. Tomorrow I teach children's lit with somewhere between 50 and 60 students (last count was 56). Thanfully, the university has allowed us to hire "coaches" to assist us in the work. So, my pal and librarian kextraordinaire, Lois Buckman, is coming along on the trip. It is always nice to have a boon companion on these long drives. I know we will talk most of the way, but I do have a couple of audiobooks ready to go as well.

Here is a book I finished earlier in the week while sitting in waiting rooms at the doctor's office.

Fellow ALAN member and YALSA past prez, Bonnie Kunzel, is responsible for my first foray into the world of Philip Reeve. FEVER CRUMB (Scholastic 2010) is a prequel of sorts to the MORTAL INSTRUMENTS quartet. In it we meet Fever Crumb, the only girl in the Order of Engineers, there because Dr. Crumb rescued her as a foundling (or so the story goes when he tells it to her). Fever is sent to work with archaeologist Kit Solvent who has unearthed a rare find, one that will change Fever's life and all of what she thought she knew of her past. This is a fast paced, absorbing novel that deals with some contemporary issues within its framework including the search for identity, something any teen can understand. <229>
