tween perfection

Being named after Amelia Earhart sets up some mighty high expectations, especially when you wear hand me downs and have a family with a reputation. And so it is for Amelia Earhart Rye until a new girl comes to her school. Enter Fancy (do NOT call her Frances, she warns), a girl who will not put up with anything including the teasing of the school bullies. Somehow, she and Amelia end up best friends despite the fact that Amelia must lie to her Mother who would havwe a conniption fit if she knew Fancy was "colored." Set in the 1960s, this story examines not so much the history of the time but rather life in a small southern town. Not only does everyone know your name, everyone knows all of your secrets, too. And that, Amelia discovers, is OK as long as you have one true best friend. Short chapters, plenty of humor, quick pace: all of these combine to make this a perfect book for tween girls.
