Valentine's gift in a book

MY HEART IS A LIKE A ZOO by Michael Hall (Greenwillow, 2010) is the perfect gift for someone you love at Valentine's Day. Simple geometric shapes team up with bold colors to create a parade of animals from lions to herons to bulls and frogs. The heart is compared to each animal via a simile that goes beyond the predictable and simple. For instance, (My heart is like a zoo...) "bothered as a bull with a hornet in its hair." A wide range of emotions from eager to steady to hopeful to gloomy to peaceful are all accompanied by by digital full color art. While the simple shapes that comprise the animals are reminiscent of Ehlert and Carle, Hall places his own unique stamp on each illustration. The gently rolling, rhyming text will appeal to young listener as this is a perfect book to read aloud. Do let kids try their hands at creating some of their own zoo creations as well.

Tomorrow I head to Austin to talk to the library special interest group of TCEA. I need to return now to the drafting of my remarks...
