It's a good thing I was in an airplane when I reached the end of THE ASK AND THE ANSWER, Book #2 in the Chaos Walking series by Patrick Ness. Otherwise, I might have yelled out "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" and made some passengers uncomfortable. Last year's THE KNIFE OF NEVER LETTING GO was such a memorable beginning to this saga. Of course, the end left readers hanging. And now, here is Book Two. What has happened to Todd and Viola? Are they alive? Did they escape? Well kinda sorta.
Todd and Viola are back in THE ASK AND THE ANSWER once more battling Mayor Prentiss and the Noise (note: some of this will make more sense if you have read the first book). Now Mayor Prentiss is President of the community of Haven. His first order of business is to take the Cure for the Noise away from Haven's residents. In quick succession, Prentiss has segregated the men and women and begun to use the Spackle as his own private army of slaves complete with bolted ID tags. Todd is forced to work for Prentiss, leader of the Ask, while Viola is set to work with the healers, most of whom are part of a resistance movement known as the Answer. The leaders of both groups are not to be trusted.
Betrayals, plots, surprises and so much more make this an absorbing and adventurous read. The climax prepares the way for the third book (which I want RIGHT NOW). References to other dystopic novels, historical events and figures, and a brilliantly conceived story make this a winner.
