There have been many comparisons of this book to THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT TIME. The main characters in both novels are autistic. However, MARCELO IN THE REAL WORLD is a singular novel. Marcelo has an Aspergers-like condition. He has attended a private school; he lives in a treehouse rather than sleeping in his own bedroom. However, his father has informed Marcelo that the time has come to live in the real world. Marcelo will spend the summer working at his father's law offices. If he is successful at passing this test, his father will permit Marcelo to return to private school for his senior year. In the mailroom, Marcelo is under the direction of Jasmine. As the days progress, Marcelo learns some real world lessons, one that will change his relationship with his father forever.
Author Stork has created an incredibly complex character in Marcelo who could easily become a one-note protagonist to whom things continue to happen. Additionally, there are some interesting twists and turns to the plot that keep readers as off balanced as Marcelo must himself feel in the world of lawyers and corporations.
