Great day, great book

Had a terrific class today here in Edinburg. Twenty students for YA literature. These folks are our IMLS grant recipients and have taken all their classes as a group for almost 2 years now. They are friendly and cohesive and watch out for one another. So, it is a pleasure to have all 20 people with the same set of skills and understanding and background. Makes my job so much simpler. They even threw a surprise birthday party after lunch for one of their classmates. CAKE!!!

Stayed up late last night reading TIGER MOON. While I am not overly fond of the cover, the contents are astonishing. Set in India, this story focuses on a hero, Farhad, who begins as a thief and scoundrel and grows to heroic stature through a series of trials as he sets out to rescue the newest wife of the Raja, Raka. Add in a stone tiger, a wizened hermit, a villain who can change appearance at will, twins, and other complications and what is here is a complex and multi-layered novel. No one is exactly who they seem to be in this story that has aspects of Arabian Nights and the ancient tales of heroic quests. Story within story within story keeps the momentum moving ever forward, and made me stay up too late to see how the story would be resolved. There are precious few books set in India, and this one is definitely a tale that needs to be told and read and digested and shared.
