No cover, alas, since both Amazon and Titlewave show no image for this remarkable new book by Rita Williams-Garcia. JUMPED (HarperCollins, Feb. 2009) is the story of Leticia, Dominique, and Trina. All three girls attend the same high school but do travel in totally different circles. Dominique pans to jump Trina after a perceived slight. Leticia overhears Dominique's plans but is unsure about whether or not to get involved or just mind her own business. The story switches among the three girls, heightening the sense of urgency and suspense. Trina is blissfully unaware of what she has done to incur Dominique's wrath. Leticia is just trying to get through high school. Dominique has some "issues" that she is sure can be resolved if the people at school just take the time to see things her way.

No easy answers here. No nice solutions, either. This book would make for an excellent opening for discussion about responsibility, appropriate actions and reactions, and so much more. As always, Williams-Garcia has penned a book that will provoke thought and perhaps cause some readers to consider their lives in light of the events of the novel. Williams-Garcia will be one of the featured authors at NCTE in San Antonio in November. I hope some of you will make the trip to see her and the other talented folks who write for children and teens.
