three cups of tea
My friend, and current President Elect of NCTE, Kylene Beers has asked me to introduce Greg Mortenson at the NCTE conference in November (in San Antonio). It gave me the perfect excuse to read an adult book. I opted for the audio so I could listen to it today as I drove 400+ miles south here to McAllen to do some staff development tomorrow. While there are a few small glitches with the audio, the story itself drew me in and sustained me as the scenery flew past.

Mortenson, a nurse and a mountain climber, was rescued when a K-2 climb went wrong. To thank the people who rescued him and nursed him back to health, he promised to return and build a school in this small Pakistani community. The story chronicles Mortenson's efforts to raise funds, to find the materials, and to actually get the work done. Thanks to the philanthropy of a fellow former climber, Mortenson found himself at the head of the Central Asia Institute. Mortenson believes we win the war on terror by building schools and helping people. He makes a convincing case here.

I am so looking forward to meeting this driving force of a man.
