Mibs is turning 13. In her family, that generally is the age where one learns whether one will have a savvy, a special skill. Mibs' mother has the savvy of being perfect; one brother can create hurricanes and another has an electric connection. Mibs does not know what to expect. Certainly, no one in the family expects that their beloved Poppa will be in a terrible accident.
Life has turned upside down for Mibs. She is certain that her savvy will be to heal Poppa somehow. However, she first needs to get to him in his hospital room clear across Kansas. And that is when the adventure aboard the pink bus loaded with pink Bibles begins.
I adore the language play here. Ingrid Law uses words that somehow convey the spirit of the characters, especially of Mibs. And there are characters a-plenty here from the bus driving Bible salesman Lester to the fired waitress Lil to Samson and Rocket and Fish and Will Junior and Bobbi. This was a sheer joy to read, a perfect book for someone feeling a tad sick and needing, like Poppa, some healing.
