I loved NOT A BOX, the Geisel Honor book from the same author last year. Now, we have NOT A STICK. I think it is the attention to detail first and foremost. The cover has a wood grain finish. The pig is drawn very simply, perfect for a young audience. Then, there is the pattern to the book, the use of just a few colors (blue, white, black for the most part) that add up to make this a picture book that translates well with older readers. There is some influence of Mo Willems in the illustrations (simple lines that convey great meaning simply). Since time is so short today, it was a treat to read three picture books in between meetings.
