Once upon a time there lived two orphans who live with a rather mean master. However, the two are content because they have each other. Pia and Enzio, brother and sister, make the best of their plight by telling stories to one another about the day that they will leave the village and their drab existence. Little do they know that day is fast approaching. A dropped pouch with mysterious contents, two hermits, a Wordsmith, and the considerable talents of Sharon Creech conspire to change the lives of Pia and Enzio.
This charming intermediate novel is lusciously illustrated or rather illuminated by Caldecott winner David Diaz. The lovely gold toned drop cap along with a small painting makes the medieval setting come alive.
