Nerdy and Proud of It

I head off to Michigan soon for the nErDCamp run by Colby Sharp and his colleagues in crime. It will be my first time attending and speaking, and I am more than a little nervous. But my nerves are more than balanced out by the expectations that I will learn SO much at camp (and I have never ever been to any kind of camp, so I am counting this as a first for me). I will have the chance to hear other educators and a ton of authors. I know I will be exhausted at the end, but it will be the same sort of tired I experienced after Boothbay. It passed quickly, but the renewal stays on long after. As I enter my 41st year of teaching, renewal is a necessary ingredient in my life/

Like many others, I began packing with stacking books and making decisions about which ones would go into the carry on and how many others I should take. After those essentials, the rest of the luggage will be filled with clothes and toiletries. But books come first. Between here and home again, I will divest myself of the books I complete. I will hand them to a colleague or new friend. Sometimes, I place them in an airport lounge or in the pocket on a plane. I like the idea of books finding their way in the world.

It will be so nice to be in a huge group of fellow book lovers. I know some who will be there, and I am looking forward to getting to meet some of my "friends" from social media, too. In this group, my love of books will bind us together, our common bond a love of reading and books. After I deliver the Nerd Talk, I will calm down. I get to present with Donalyn Miller after that, and, quite frankly, I would be happy just sitting and listening to her the entire time.

So, off I go, leaving BH and Scout to fend for themselves for a few days. Come say hello if you are there, too.
