Stopping the Slide

This article should be must read for all administrators who want to narrow the reading achievement gap:

We now have numerous studies that point to ACCESS to books beyond the classroom and school walls as essential in narrowing the achievement gap. The question remains: how can schools provide the necessary steps to ensure ALL kids have ACCESS and CHOICE for books over the summer vacation?

This short summary is a starting point. Please take a look at the references as well. There are some other fine articles about summer reading vs. the summer slide. I know summer seems a long way away in the middle of winter. But the end of the school year is too late to consider what we should do.
