Expectations, part 2  
Yet another link showed up in my Twitter feed this weekend. It was a criticism of SSR (sustained silent reading) and why it does not work. Krashen does a much better job than I ever could discussing the points raised by the author of this piece.

What I find interesting here is that this author elects to mention Donalyn Miller's work: "My results are a bit less than Book Whisperer, Donalyn Miller, achieves in terms of books read per year, but I’ve got a lot more time in class to teach other things I value because I don’t use SSR in my classroom." If anyone has read Donalyn's books (yes, BOTH of them) then he or she knows that Donalyn still taught in her classroom. It was not all free-wheeling independent reading with no instruction. In fact, her latest blog entry (http://bookwhisperer.com/blog/) discusses the research behind independent reading, research the author of the criticism of SSR either dismisses (because the NRP did) or perhaps does not even know.

The other thing that is fascinating here is that this blog post builds up to a chance to mention the author's own book, one that is touted as being comprehensive and uncanned. Apparently my definition of uncanned is faulty as I see references to worksheets, quizzes, flashcards, ad activities galore. If you really want to see uncanned, read THE POWER OF READING, THE BOOK WHISPERER, BOOK LOVE, IN THE MIDDLE, and READING IN THE WILD. I wish that before stones were cast at SSR, the author had taken some time to deliberate on his statements that basically trash SSR. Time to read (and, yes, at school) is precious.
