shake, rattle, and roll

Kate Milford's first novel, BONESHAKER (Clarion 2010), is one that will indeed shake, rattle, and roll readers. No, it is not about music. It is about a town poised o the brink of disaster. Natalie is 13 and has a shameful secret she keeps from her family and friends: she cannot ride the bicycle she and her father have so lovingly restored. It is a boneshaker to say the least. When she attempts to mount and ride it Natalie generally ends up with splinters and scrapes and bruises. Into her small town (called Arcane, and do please pay attention to names here as they are KEY) comes a traveling medicine show. They are not there by plan but because they have lost a wheel at the crossroads. Of course, they come to Natalie's father, the local mechanic, for assistance. Natalie knows immediately that there is something seriously amiss with Dr. Limberleg (remember what I said about paying attention to names, please). Soon, the charlatans that are part of the medicine show are drawing the townspeople to their tents and offering them cures for whatever ails them/ What are they really up to? Natalie is itching to find out. And therein lies the danger. <469>

CLAS presentation
Hi! I was in the audience for your presentation, along with 15 of the preservice English teachers at the University of Wyoming. They're still talking about it, and were very impressed with the books you talked about. Thanks for coming out to the Mountain West!
