ALAN begins
We are off and running with the 2007 ALAN Workshop. Sherman Alexie kicked us all off this morning with a touching and often hilarious presentation. Thanks to the fabulous Victoria Stapleton, I had the chance to shake his hand and tell him how much I adored the book and his speech at the NBA (Laurie Halse Anderson had a link from her blog). Chris Crutcher followed with a deeply emotional talk about censorship. Not fair to make us all cry in the morning, Crutcher! Now we are ready for coffee and bathroom breaks before coming back to listen to a host of other speakers. It is a jam packed program, folks. Make plans now to come to San Antonio in 2008 for ALAN and NCTE.

Here is a photo of the resident teens at my house, my band geeks, Corrie and Natalie.

Edited to add...

The break out sessions were cut short due to time crunch. So, the session Daria Plumb, Mary Arnold, Bonnie Kunzel and I planned was 35 minutes long (not 10 more we expected). Booktalks became book blurbs as we raced to finish in time for lunch. We had an appreciative and SRO crowd. Lunch was rushed as well. Now we are enjoying a panel with Cecil Castellucci, Holly Black, Sara Ryan, Jo Knowles, and Ann Angel with Helen Frost yet to come before the end of the day. I love ALAN!

Edited again to add:

The final panel today was on humor. Hosted by David Gill (and how I wish I had snapped a photo of him in his hat) with Deb Garfinkle, Pete Hautman, and David Lubar. Nice way to end the day with Lubar making us groan, chuckle, guffaw, and laugh!

It all sounds wonderful. I will definitely be there next year. Thanks for the updates.

Oh, I wish you'd snapped a picture of David in his hat, too. :-)
Glad you enjoyed yourself!

Audio or video?
Teri, did anyone audio or video tape Sherman and Chris's presentations? Or David Gill's panel with Deb, Pete and David? I'd love to have the chance to hear what was said, even if I couldn't be there.

Re: Audio or video?
Sadly, no taping. ALthough I am certain there was someone there doing it surreptitiously.

Great Presentation!
I was at your ALAN presentation - I loved it! Please, please post the other two PowerPoints (and make the one that's blocked work)... I didn't write down all the titles since you said they'd be online.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for all the great book recommendations and discussion. It must have been tempting to run over into lunch - I appreciate that you left time to eat, since I would never have been able to get up and leave those lists of amazing books.

Re: Great Presentation!
I fixed the one that would not open. The other two are here. Keep scrolling.

Re: Great Presentation!
I also enjoyed your presentation. I walked away from it with a list of nonfiction books (particularly) that I will definitely be looking into purchasing for my library. Thanks for posting the PowerPoints. I'm glad I'll be able to point the media specialists in my town towards them. I'm also glad that I can now put a face to the name/blog!
